Coinbase handed clients' personal data over to the U.S government

Coinbase handed data of 13,000 clients over to the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the agency’s effort to collect taxes.  The crypto-exchange has been repeatedly forced to turn in “taxpayer ID, name, birth date, address, and historical transaction records for certain higher-transacting customers during the 2013-2015 period.” Users were notified by receiving an email from the company on Friday, Feb. 23

Previously, Coinbase had considered the government’s requirement to report data of the entire client base to be excessive, and partially won a trial: “After a long process, the court issued an order that represents a partial, but still significant, victory for Coinbase and its customers: the order requires Coinbase to produce only certain limited categories of information from the accounts of approximately 13,000 customers.”
